Design and development of a web application for teacher-led screening of dyslexia risk in primary education

Specific learning difficulties in reading, associated with dyslexia, are often identified late in primary education, narrowing the window for timely intervention. This paper describes the design of a web application for teacher-led screening of reading-risk signs in students, conceived as a screening tool rather than a diagnostic instrument. The proposal is grounded in evidence identifying phonological awareness as the main predictor of reading acquisition and in the early predictors of dyslexia risk reported in the literature. The application integrates a mixed scheme: one part completed by the student through seven audio-supported playful activities, and another based on the teacher's structured observation of oral reading and writing. From four areas, the system produces a traffic-light result that guides the pedagogical decision to continue, monitor or refer. The functional architecture, the risk-classification criteria and the scope of the tool as support for early detection in the classroom are described. It is concluded that technology-supported teacher screening can strengthen the timely identification of at-risk students, always under specialized professional supervision.
